GSLA Moving Forwards
The last 18 months have been the most difficult and challenging in Gibraltar’s recent history. The pandemic has had a global effect and whilst Gibraltar has been a guiding light in how to manage the situation not least with our vaccination programme, our sporting fraternity have been standard bearers in terms of proactivity and conduct. Covid-19 has highlighted just how important sports and physical activity are, more so in Gibraltar. Our local associations had to re-invent themselves after the first lockdown and adapt their activities to be able to comply with the restrictions imposed whilst continuing to offer their members with the opportunity to return to competition. As time progressed and the situation improved it was great to see our sporting venues buzzing once again. The second lockdown did not dampen their enthusiasm with most competitive seasons completed one way or another well in time for the summer break. We now look forward optimistically to as normal a season 2021/2022 as possible.
The GSLA’s summer programmes were not immune from the pandemic but the Stay and Play programme was held in the summer of 2020. The new enforced format proved ironically to work better than the previously established model and has now been adapted as the standard modus operandi moving forward. With this mind it gives me great pleasure to confirm that we will not only be organising our Stay and Play programme in the summer of 2021 but we will also be welcoming back the ever popular Sports Train after its one year hiatus. Staff are already working hard to ensure that they deliver the best programmes ever. This is a challenge I lay down every summer and one in which they have never been found wanting.
On that note, I want to end by not only thanking those involved during the summer but express my gratitude to ALL GSLA staff at ALL levels. Their conduct, willingness to adapt and grasp of the gravity of the situation the community faced and the important role the GSLA could play has not gone unnoticed. They are worthy of all the accolades that come their way.
Have a great summer!!!!
Yours in sport
